Iran to hold contest on Persian Gulf amid Trump folly

Iran’s Art Bureau is to organize a competition on the theme of the Persian Gulf amid the befuddlement of US President Donald Trump’s recent speech.

Iran’s Art Bureau is to organize a competition with the theme of the Persian Gulf in reaction to the US President Donald Trump misnaming the ancient waterway.

The Art Bureau affiliated to Iran-based Islamic Development Organization plans to organize the cultural competition following Trump’s speech in which he used the fictitious name "the Arabian Gulf" to refer to the Persian Gulf.

The event will be comprised of various categories, including cartoon, caricature, poetry, short story and short screenplay.

In his speech earlier this month, Trump called the Persian Gulf the "Arabian Gulf.” Shortly after the speech, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani urged the US president to brush up on his world history and geography to improve his comprehension of international obligations and global civility, etiquette and conventions.

Iran designated April 30 as National Persian Gulf Day to highlight the waterway has always been referred to by historians and ancient texts as "Persian."
